Today we took on the Purbecks. Starting in Broadstone, at Penny’s house, I was greeted with a cake, a candle and a rousing chorus of happy birthday from Penny and Mike. Aww, I was touched, what a way to start a 40 mile bike ride.
Off we set to Lychett Matravers, out over the undulating hills to Wareham where Penny stopped for a rest. I was concerned she might fall into the swollen river so held on tight just in case. (See photos below - click on them to enlarge.)

Around Arne and the nature reserves to Corfe Castle, stopping for a brief chat with Pete Roper (see HIIT 1) and a photo opportunity beneath the castle ruins. Pete was about to set off on a run up hill and down dale in the same area. We offered to pace him until he pointed to his first hill. We left him in favour of continuing our ride to Studland.
It rained from the outset but with new neoprene overshoes, waterproof trousers and jackets who was worried? We carried on in heavy showers and mini floods. The scenery made it well worth the effort.
Back to Poole via the chain ferry, Sandbanks and the Quay with its fishing boats and yachts, then onto the final stretch and Broadstone where the birthday cake was waiting with a steaming mug of coffee.
Perfect and no punctures!
